Three area athletes reached the podium as the WIAA track and field championships began Friday in La Crosse. Menominee Indian High School sophomore Ania Smith took fifth in the Division 3 shot put, going 39 feet, 11 inches on her final throw of the day. The toss moved her from eighth place onto the podium. “It was a pretty good performance,” Menominee Indian coach Chris Clache said.

One by one, things are getting done. With the help of two granddaughters — OK, they mainly did the work, I just supervised — the rest of the planting was done last Saturday. The huge box of canna bulbs were carried up from the basement and out to the flower bed. Then, spade in hand, little by little, they dug up the flower bed and planted the canna bulbs.

Our daughter’s softball team did well this past season and ended it contending for the regional championship. Wouldn’t you know, our girls had to butt heads again with Wausau Newman for the title. This team has bumped us out of the next level of play a number of years, in different sports.

Seven Senior Girl Scouts from Bonduel leave Saturday for Washington, D.C., to spend a week in the capital.

Donna Milbauer organizes the book sale, which will be held next week, at the Shawano City-County Library. She was born in Clintonville, graduating from Clintonville High School. Milbauer worked at FWD for 10 ½ years and then Alliant Energy for 26 ½ years. Milbauer and her husband of 38 years, Jerry, live on Shawano Lake and have three children. They like to travel and spend three months in Florida in the winter.

Fae J. Church, 90, of Bowler, born on March 24, 1924, went home on June 3, 2014. Brenda Sue Dickenson, 55, of Shawano, passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday, June 4, 2014. She was born March 25, 1959, in Chicago, a daughter of the late Kenneth P. Dickenson and Shirley M.

Donald J. Tate, 87, of Appleton, passed away on June 5, 2014, at Manor Care. Donald was born on Feb. 6, 1927, to Emanuel and Meta (Raddant) Tate in Shawano. Don was a veteran having served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Don was united in marriage to Gloria Wolfgram on March 6, 1948, and together they celebrated 66 wonderful years together. Don was a hard working family man and always was there for his family.
