Ambulance service receives heart association award

Shawano Ambulance Service has received an award from the American Heart Association for implementing specific quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who suffer severe heart attacks. More than 100 receive DFS scholarships
The Shawano Dollars for Scholars program in May awarded $275,000 in scholarships for continuing education to more than 100 Shawano Community High School graduating seniors. The highest awards, totalling $7,500, were presented to Courtney Baumann, Sawyer Buck, Lindsey Kurtz and Lindsey McFarlane. Clintonville Firemen's Festival taking shape
The 35th annual Clintonville Firemen’s Festival will be held Aug. 8-9 at Olen Park in Clintonville. The festival will kick off with the second annual fish fry at 5 p.m. Friday. The Slab Band from the Wausau area is scheduled to take the stage at 8 p.m. A parade will step off at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Dollars for Scholars seeks Second Chance applicants
Shawano Dollars for Scholars has yet to find a recipient this year for the Judge Eberlein Second Chance Scholarship. The scholarship, for up to $5,000, is intended for people looking to improve their job prospects by attending a vocational or technical school. Man charged with 8th-offense OWI
A Shawano man arrested Saturday after an anonymous caller told police he was allegedly driving drunk has been charged with eighth-offense operating while intoxicated. Jerry A. Jarvis, 48, could face 10 years in prison and a $25,000 fine if found guilty. According to the criminal complaint, police were notified just before 8 p.m.

Family to remember hit-and-run victim on anniversary
The family of a Michigan man who died in an apparent hit-and-run one year ago will honor his memory Saturday on the anniversary of his death. Timothy J. Meade, 22, of Stephenson, Mich., was found at 2:30 a.m. June 28 in the eastbound lane of traffic on County Road M at the state Highway 29 overpass in Shawano. The case remains unsolved. The family will join Shawano County authorities at the Sheriff’s Department at 1 p.m.

Where food comes from
Thousand of eggs, thousands of potatoes and endless cartons of milk were required Sunday to feed more than 5,000 people who attended the Shawano County Brunch on the Farm. The Kurowski Dairy was abuzz with activity as visitors enjoyed breakfast inside a barn and outside.

DOT outlines Airport Drive options
State transportation officials were in Shawano on Tuesday to offer two options for planned improvements to Airport Drive slated to take place in 2016, but it was clear their preferred option would take the four-lane road down to two lanes. Diane M. Kettner
Diane Marie Kettner, 70, of Bonduel, died on Friday, June 20, 2014, at home. Born on Sept. 19, 1943, in Milwaukee, she is the daughter of the late Ervin and Esther (Erickson) Bleckschmidt. Diane was united in marriage to Gordon “Gordy” Kettner on July 1, 1967, in Milwaukee. The couple moved to the Shawano area in 1994, where Diane worked in the Shawano Hospital Critical Care Unit as a monitor technician.

Eugene H. Giessel
Eugene Harry Giessel, 86, of Tilleda, passed away Monday, June 23, 2014, in Appleton. Born on May 31, 1928, in the town of Seneca, he was the son of the late Helmuth and Amanda (Tews) Giessel. After graduating from high school, Eugene enlisted with the United States Army and served his country during the Korean War.
