Tech ed students compete at national conference

Oconto Falls High School students Jake Lubenske placed sixth and Kyle Sharboneau 26th at the 50th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference held from June 23-27 in Kansas City, Missouri. Both boys will be seniors at OFHS in the fall. With the sixth-place finish in the sheet metal competition, Lubenske greatly improved his 2012 showing when he placed 16th in the nation as a freshman. Gillett on track to receive $149K less from state
More than half of Wisconsin’s public school districts will receive more general aid for the 2014-15 school year than they did for 2013-14, according to estimates released last week by the Department of Public Instruction. In Oconto County, three school districts—Oconto Falls, Oconto and Lena—are projected to receive more aid, while Gillett and Suring likely will lose aid. County seeks grant to reorient shooting range
Oconto County will apply for a grant to reorient and revamp the Machickanee Forest Shooting Range to address safety and noise concerns expressed by neighbors. The Oconto County Forest, Parks and Recreation Committee decided Wednesday to secure funds to redevelop the range, built in 2003 on Garrity Road, after deciding against relocating the range to an alternative site. “I would say we stay where we are,” committee member Richard Nelson said.

ATV trail needs some rest stops
To the editor: As they say, it only takes one bad apple to spoil it for everyone else. I am contacting you regarding the ATV trail that starts in Krakow and goes up to and beyond Townsend. I now know why folks are reluctant to allow these trails to be open. From some of the riders, there is no respect for property owners along the trail. I was working in my yard around 6 p.m. June 18 when all of a sudden I heard an ATV pull into my yard.

Farm instilled lessons for lifetime
While we were probably lucky to live on a farm during the 1940s and the early ’50s, my sister and I didn’t always see it that way. Our life on a dairy farm was divided roughly into three main activities—school, chores and self-motivated entertainment. School probably took up more hours than anything else, except sleep. And chores weren’t too far behind that. Times were tough for our family back then.

Generations connect over July 4 holiday
The recent Fourth of July three-day weekend was an opportunity for family and friends to gather and for the generations to connect, whether on the path around the Falls or some distance from the path. Traditions include picnics, parades and fireworks, among so many other things. With the prevalence of social media, many traditions are shared. Given the time of the year, many of those traditions are water related.

Dorothy Viola Hottenstine
Dorothy Viola Hottenstine, 89, died peacefully on Friday, July 4, 2014, at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna with her family at her side. Dorothy was born on April 25, 1925, in Shawano, to the late Henry and Rose (Tischauser) Salzman. She was united in marriage on Feb, 23, 1946, to A. J. Hottenstine. Dorothy was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church of Appleton.
