David S. Craven, 52, of Clintonville, formerly of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, Aug. 7, 2014, at his residence. David was born March 23, 1962, in Charleston, South Carolina, a son of the late James D. Craven and Dagmar Valeria Snelson. He attended school in South Carolina, later moving to Texas with his family. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in San Antonio, Texas, with the class of 1980.

Gerald Arlen “Jerry Waub” Waubanascum started his journey to the Spirit World on Thursday evening, Aug. 7, 2014, in Shawano. Jerry Waub was born on Jan. 30, 1953, in Keshena, a son of the late William Sr. and Mary Ann (Waupoose) Waubanascum. He was employed as a certified caregiver in Menominee County. Jerry Waub was a member of Big Drum and an avid outdoorsman.

Vernon L. Ainsworth, 79, of Shawano, passed away Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, in Appleton. Born on Oct. 29, 1934, in Shawano, he was the son of the late Henry and Pauline (DeSwarte) Ainsworth. On Aug. 17, 1963, Vernon was united in marriage to Betty Thimke in Shawano. Together they made their home on his family farm, which was established in 1898. Vernon worked on the farm until retirement in February 2014.

Wow! “Suessical the Musical” sold out all performances! The colorful costumes, happy songs and joyful cast of characters warmed everyone’s hearts. Congrats to Brandon Byng and his large cast for brightening our summer. A new Little Free Library sponsored by the Monday Night Book Club, aka Wine, Women and Words, has been installed at Shawano Lake County Park. The library was suggested by the newest member of the club, Mary Windmiller. “A plaque on it will read that it is sponsored by the Monday Night Book Club,” said Jane Melchior, the retired teacher who started the club in October 2011. Somehow the calendar got turned to August, and we are well into the month already. It is a strange month this year, with five Sundays, five Fridays and five Saturdays. That usually means that people can pack extra fun into their last month of summer. My flowers and yard have been in disarray since spring. I lost many of my plants over winter, and while some have been replaced, they aren’t blooming this first year.

Chuck Kurhajec volunteers at the Shawano Area Food Pantry and Resource Center, Shawano Medical Center and the Disabled American Veterans. He is a native of Sturtevant, which is near Racine. After Kurhajec graduated from Horlick High School, he joined the Air Force, serving for four years. For 35 years, he was a pipe fitter at Johnson Wax Co. in Sturtevant. In 2004, Kurhajec and his wife of 41 years, Reva, bought land in the town of Wescott.

I am sitting at the computer writing my story this week as perspiration trickles down my back, thankful for the air-conditioned air coming up from the furnace vent to my left, quickly cooling me down. I’ve just come in from unloading hay. We had filled three wagon loads to the brim when we finished second crop a while back and had parked them in the shed to tackle later.

To the editor: A citizen is circulating papers to recall Alderperson Greg Rose. Just 56 signatures will require the city to hold a special election. These signers do not have to be registered voters and do not have to have voted in the last election. The cost of this special election is estimated at a little over $2,500, not including the time city staff will have to spend preparing and implementing the election.
