5 ‘don’t miss’ Halloween homes

Editor’s note: Reporter Jason Arndt and correspondent Carol Wagner provide this guide to some of the more impressive Halloween decorating efforts in Shawano this season. There are plenty of other homes also decked out for the holiday, so be sure to check them out before they’re replaced, before you know it, with Christmas lights. Jacki and Don Fairbairn used Halloween experiences from their days at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as inspiration for decorating their yard at 413 Franklin St. “They know how to do Halloween in Madison,” Jacki Fairbairn said. “We used Madison as inspiration.” The couple are decorating their Victorian style home and yard for the ninth year. They hosted about 1,000 trick-or-treaters last year. “(Attendance) just got bigger and bigger every year,” Jacki said. They will have live music this year, as well as an open house. “When we first moved here, this house had been vacant for a couple of years,” Jacki said. “It was kind of a scary place.” “The bushes were all overgrown and it was just creepy,” Don Fairbairn said. The couple have a son in college and another in high school.
