Accountability important to referees, educators

While Sunday’s Packers/Cowboys rendition of “Ice Bowl II” may not have lived up to the mystique, nor the temperature dip of the original contest, for the record-setting Lambeau Field crowd and those who were sitting on the edges of their seats in the homes bordering the path around the Falls, the contest was pretty intense. St. Anthony’s to hold open house
St. Anthony School will celebrate National Catholic Schools Week with an open house from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27. The snow date is Thursday, Jan. 29. St. Anthony School, 253 N. Franklin St., Oconto Falls, serves students in 3-year-old preschool through fifth grade. The event is part of the nationwide celebration of Catholic education during the week of Jan. 25-31.

Gillett suffers home loss to Southern Door
Freshman center Megan La Crosse’s 15 points were too much for Gillett Secondary School to overcome in a 37-24 loss to Southern Door at home Friday. “For a freshman to play that well, we will not see another 6-footer like that this year, and we are encouraged with how well my players played against a good Division 3 team,” Gillett coach Justin Daul said. GIRLS BASKETBALL Suring 56 Lena 29 Suring’s MacKenzie LaMarre made six three-pointers at home Thursday. She finished with 22 points. Panthers get third Bay wrestling win
When it came to the close matches, the Oconto Falls High School wrestlers took care of business. That made all the difference. The Panthers won three consecutive matches – from 132 to 145 pounds – by three points or less and built a comfortable lead over Denmark on Friday night.

OFHS finishes 2nd in annual Brawl
Senior Dewey Krueger won the tournament MVP award and remained undefeated as the Oconto Falls High School wrestling team placed second among 15 schools Saturday at the annual Brawl in the Falls. The Panthers (239.5) were six points behind winning Bay Port won the meet with 245.5 points.

Packers rally to beat Cowboys, advance
Slowed by injury but perfect in the clutch, Aaron Rodgers used his accurate arm to help the Packers move one step closer to the Super Bowl. An officiating call that went Green Bay's way also helped in a 26-21 win Sunday over the Dallas Cowboys. Rodgers went 9 of 9 in the fourth quarter, including and a laser-like 13-yard touchdown pass to Richard Rodgers for the go-ahead score with 9:10 left of the fourth quarter.

To stay warm, bundle up and volunteer
When I listen to the weather forecasts, or listen to people talk, I have the feeling that it has never been cold in Wisconsin before. What is up with that? To the best of my memory, it gets cold most every year about this time, so quit your belly aching. The weather forecasters, with their Polar Vortex and their “chill factor” talk, make me feel colder than I normally would feel.
