Christmas show benefits community groups

The Shawano County Arts Council and The Box in the Wood Theatre Guild will present $400 checks to the Shawano County Historical Society and Shawano Area Mathew 25 (SAM 25). The funds were raised from donations collected at this year’s annual Christmas program, “Hometown Christmas,” which was held Dec. 6-7. The free annual event is presented as a community service project by the Shawano County Arts Council and The Box in the Wood Theatre Guild.

Cellcom warns customers of potential scam
Cellcom is warning local residents about people who are posing as representatives for the wireless provider to gain access to homes. A New London customer called Cellcom earlier this week to report that two men in an unmarked truck arrived at his home and stated they needed to go inside to check on something that was causing interference with one of the cell site towers.

Group launches writing contest for youngsters
The Shawano Area Writers is inviting young writers living in Shawano and Menominee counties to take part in the 2015 George Putz Memorial Writing Contest. The contest, named after a Shawano man who bequeathed the Shawano Area Writers $77,000 in his will, is open to students in grades 1-12.

The Shawano chapter of Lutherans for Life at St. James Lutheran Church is gathering signatures for the annual ad that supports their belief in the sanctity and value of human life. “We try to keep life issues in front of the congregation,” said secretary Louise Zahn, who has been a part of the group since it began.

Volunteer Profile
Jeanne Cronce has a Little Sister in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program in Shawano. Cronce is a Shawano native, graduating from Shawano High School. She earned a degree in elementary education from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and taught for 23 years in the then-Shawano-Gresham School District. Cronce returned to Marian College to get her masters in educational leadership.

Dealing with the cold
The temperatures have plummeted and then the wind kicked up, so on the farm, like everyone else, we are dealing with the cold. Farming in the winter has its own unique trials, but when the temps take a nose dive and, on top of that, throw in a blustery wind, well, the daily tasks become a bit more challenging than usual.

Anthony J. Kolosso Sr.
Anthony J. “Tony” Kolosso Sr., 74, Green Bay, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, at a Green Bay nursing home. He was born on Nov. 15, 1940, in Big Falls to Joseph and Esther (Swenson) Kolosso. Tony lived in Tigerton for many years before moving to Green Bay in 1996.

Esther A. Deering
Esther A. Deering, 83, of Shawano passed away on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015, in Shawano. Esther was born on April 2, 1931, the daughter of Emil and Sophia (Gulzynski) Passon, of rural Pulaski. Esther married Walter Deering at BVM Catholic Church in Pulaski. He preceded her in death on Sept. 20, 2011. Esther was a hair dresser most of her adult life.
