To the editor: On May 15, our Power of Peer Supports (POPS) group at Bonduel High School had the opportunity to help out with a special needs prom dance at our school. About eight different schools came from nearby areas to spend the day together. Girls had their hair and makeup done and wore beautiful dresses. Boys were dressed in their very best as well!

To the editor: This is in regard to the story from May 14 entitled, “Council denies homeless shelter permit.” I was initially disheartened by the conversation at the City Council meeting regarding the issuance of a conditional use permit to Shawano Area Matthew 25 (SAM 25) to create an emergency center/shelter on Green Bay Street.

It seems the month of May is always a time for me to reflect back to the past. On May 28, 1985, my first column appeared in the Shawano Evening Leader, as it was known at that time. Unless my math fails me, that would mean that I have written this column every week for the past 30 years. That seems a long time for me to do this, and even longer for you, my loyal readers, to read these simple words.

Lolly Bower is a member of the Friends of Shawano County Libraries Inc., which will be having a book sale from June 8-10 at the Shawano City-County Library in Shawano. Bower was born in Minneapolis and grew up in the country outside Chicago. After graduating from Dundee Community High School, she attended Northern Illinois University in DeKalb for two years before marrying and raising three children.

Usually, in my weekly rambling, I discuss life here on the farm. I’ve chatted with you about our farm activity and covered everything from smelling cow’s breath to hauling calves in with the skid steer. I’ve let you in on just how often we use that skid steer and you are probably sick of hearing about it.

The Shawano Tree Advisory Board was formed in November 1993 through the efforts of the local forester. “It was to assist him in his work,” said Gerry Stephens, secretary and original member of the board. The mission is to promote and educate the public about the value and beauty of trees, which can improve air quality, reduce heating and cooling costs, and increase property values in the city. James R. Heinz, 89, of Shawano, passed away on Monday, May 18, 2015 in Shawano. Jim was born on June 25, 1925 in Shawano, the son of the late Gus and Esther (Ludolph) Heinz. Jim loved Shawano and lived here for most of his 89 years. The Heinz family has strong foundations in the Shawano community. Jim’s father was the pharmacist that owned the Heinz Drug Store on Main Street for many years.

Kim M. Van Boxtel, 48, of Shawano, passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2015, at Oak Haven in Shawano. Kim was born in Appleton on Jan. 17, 1967, to William and Sandra (Niemuth) Springstroh. She attended Seymour High School, graduating in 1985. She then went on to further her education, studying business, marketing and communications at Fox Valley Tech and Concordia University. Kim worked at Secura Insurance, Thrivent Financial and Met Life.
