VanStraten holds off Czarapata in stock car feature

Grant will help efforts to preserve Menominee language
Efforts to preserve the endangered language of the Menominee have gotten a boost thanks to a grant that will help a University of Wisconsin-Madison linguist translate native text. UW-Madison Professor Monica Macaulay, who has long collaborated with the tribe, is working with people fluent in Menominee to convert material written in 1928 into colloquial English.

Shawano schools honored by state
Only 157 schools in Wisconsin were recognized as a 2015 School of Distinction, and two of them are in Shawano. Hillcrest Primary School and Olga Brener Intermediate School are among the schools recognized for excellence by the state Department of Public Instruction.

2013 hit-and-run still haunts victim’s family
The family of a Michigan man killed in a hit-and-run two years ago is calling for the public’s help in solving the case as the anniversary of his death nears. Timothy J. Meade, 22, of Stephenson, Michigan, was found about 2:30 a.m.

OWI injury A Green Bay man is facing a felony charge of operating while intoxicated-causing injury as a result of a single-vehicle crash last month in the town of Richmond. Bruce S. Pirlott, 45, could face a maximum six years in prison and $10,000 fine if found guilty.

Nature center offers summer camps, programs
Navarino Nature Center has planned a number of activities for the summer months of July and August. Three weeks of Navarino Nature Center summer camps start on July 27. The Junior Investigator Day Camp, for ages 7-10, runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon from July 27-30. The Junior Camper, for ages 10-15, will be held Aug. 6 and 7. Campers will spend one night camping out at the nature center.

Sportsmen donate $500 to Oconto River Kids
The Kelly Lake Sportsman’s Club recently donated $500 to the Oconto River Kids program, the third such donation in as many years. The Oconto River Kids is a group of outdoorsmen and women whose focus is assisting children with life-threatening illnesses attain their outdoor dreams through hands-on hunting and fishing adventures.
