“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way.” — John Maxwell Eddie Sheppard, assistant city administrator/public works coordinator, recently announced the promotion of Andy Daniel to operations director of the Shawano Public Works Department. Andy commented, “I have worked in the department for a total of about 28 years; 25 years were full-time. I was a laborer, truck driver and an engineering aid.

This is the time of year when changes are all around us. The trees are beginning to get their fall beauty, the corn fields have been turning brown for a while now, and it looks like autumn has hit whether we are ready or not. There are still some warm and sunny days, but the nights get cooler. I like this time of year. It always makes me yearn to go out and walk on crunchy leaves.

Especially for the nonfarmer readers, this week I’d like to describe how we set up our bagger to begin harvesting our crops. I’m explaining this not as an expert, but from a farm wife’s point of view. I’m my husband’s right-hand man and, over the years, have learned from his instruction. We’ve finished chopping corn for some time now. The rest of our corn crop will be stored as cob for later use in grinding into ground feed for our cows.

Ruth Schinke helps at the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry near Navarino. She was born in the town of Lessor, grew up in Navarino and graduated from Bonduel High School. Schinke worked at the former Chilton Toys in Seymour for 28 years and then at Good Shepherd Nursing Home for seven years. Schinke and her husband of 54 years, Ben, are both retired. They have three children and four grandchildren. Schinke lives near Leeman.

The Strong Bones classes through the University of Wisconsin-Extension have continuously grown in popularity. This summer, the program began a Summer Walking Challenge, going all the way to Boston, a total of 1,235 miles. “Most made it there and back,” said Nancy Schultz, UW-Extension family living educator and a certified instructor for the programs. As the teams walked, they learned tips to help stay healthy as they became more active.

Silver Lake College recently honored Bob and Pat Endries, of Shawano, during its dedication of the Endries Family Heritage Room. A focus of the room is a pictorial history time line map honoring the people, mission and impact of the Manitowoc college. Angeline Sophia Neumeier, 92, of Gresham, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015, in Appleton. Angeline was born in Maple Grove on Oct. 6, 1922, to the late Stanley and Elizabeth (Baranczyk) Lech. On Oct. 12, 1940, Angeline was united in marriage to Lawrence J. Neumeier in Gresham. Together, they raised a family of three boys and two girls.

David E. Kohn Sr., 72, Tigerton, died on Friday, Sept. 18, 2015, at his home. He was born on May 28, 1943, in Shawano, the son of the late Ervin and Frieda (Ploeger) Kohn. On June 28, 1970, David was united in marriage to Lauretta Miller in Wittenberg. She preceded him in death on Sept. 17, 2006. David was a United States Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam War.

Sandra L. Peters, “Young She-Bear,” 69, of Keshena, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015, in Shawano. Sandra was born in Chicago on Dec. 23, 1945, to the late Joseph Peters and Frances Tourtillott. She loved riding through the Menominee Reservation, going to the casino and all holidays.
