SCHS sophomore’s golf season ends at sectional

Shawano Community High School sophomore Brianna Zook was able to do something the rest of her teammates could not do last week. Advance to sectionals. At Thornberry Creek Country Club in Green Bay for the WIAA Division 1 sectionals on Tuesday, Zook shot a round of 103 in the first group of the day. To save two souls
The devil went down to Georgia looking for a soul to steal, according to the old Charlie Daniels song. However, the prince of darkness is hoping to get his hands on two souls when he goes to New Hampshire in “The Devil and Daniel Webster.” The two-act play will be performed by the Box in the Wood Theatre Guild for two weeks beginning Thursday. Dale R. Zahn
Dale R. Zahn, 66, of the town of Pella, Shawano County, passed away unexpectedly Friday afternoon, Oct. 2, 2015, of natural causes while doing what he loved to do: driving his Gator and getting ready for evening chores. Dale was born on March 14, 1949, in Clintonville as the son of the late Orville and Alvina (Krueger) Zahn. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Pella Opening Church, where he was a lifelong member.

Oxygen tank leak prompts evacuation
An oxygen tank leak at the former Shawano Medical Center, 309 N. Bartlett St., caused an evacuation of nearby homes for about 40 minutes Sunday night. A loud hissing sound and a huge cloud were reported just after 10 p.m. A second caller reported two tanks leaking gas. Shawano police and the Shawano Area Fire Department responded to the scene.

BOYS SOCCER Hawks fall to Menasha Jacob Moesch scored in the 80th minute to tally Shawano’s only goal during Thursday’s 3-1 loss to Menasha. Manny Morel and Tyrell Hesse each recorded two saves for the Hawks (4-10-1, 1-5 Bay Conference). Gresham draws with Amherst Todd Otradovec and Levi Ludvigsen each scored for Gresham in a 2-2 draw with Amherst on Thursday night. Justice Paiser manned the goal for Gresham and recorded eight saves. Hawks dominate Wildcats in sweep
Once the Shawano Community High School girls volleyball team settled in Thursday, it cruised to a 3-0 sweep of visiting Green Bay West. The Hawks fell behind early in the first game 4-7, but then outscored the Wildcats 21-8 to finish out the 25-15 victory. Guion returns to Packers’ defensive line
The Green Bay Packers’ defensive line, instrumental in helping contain Seattle’s Marshawn Lynch and Kansas City’s Jamaal Charles the past two games, is about to get even stronger. Letroy Guion, suspended for three games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, returned to practice Wednesday.

Marcus E. Runge
Marcus E. Runge, 70, of Gillett, died on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015, in Oconto Falls. He was born on Nov. 23, 1944, in the town of Underhill to the late Alfred H. and Alma (Patzer) Runge. Marcus was a graduate of Gillett High School, Class of 1962. In 1967, he enlisted and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was a combat veteran and was head of the honor guard for the Apollo 11 astronaut parade in Chicago.

Lois A. Warrington
Lois A. Warrington, 81, of Keshena, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015, in Shawano. Lois was born in Keshena on March 11, 1934 to the late George and Sarah (Boyd) Warrington. She lived in Chicago for 30 years, returning to Keshena in 1999.

Gregg A. Elertson
Gregg Alan Elertson, 50, of Lunds, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015, in Outagamie County. Gregg was born in Neenah on Nov. 24, 1964, to Sarah (Bain) Elertson and the late Harold Elertson. Gregg went to school in Winneconne. On Oct. 16, 1999, he was united in marriage to Cheryl Rudesill at Zion Lutheran Church in Shawano. Gregg was a great storyteller and a champion sheephead player, and loved shooting pool.
