Salvation Army needs bell ringers, donations
The Salvation Army of Shawano County is in need of volunteers to ring bells during the Red Kettle Campaign, which runs through Dec. 24. Bell ringers are needed at Charlie’s County Market, Pick ‘N Save, Qualheim’s True Value and Wal-Mart. Ringing takes place on Friday and Saturday during the season. A special bell-ringing effort will take place Dec. 11 and 12.

Runaway, teens caught in stolen car
A 15-year-old runaway from the town of Wescott and three other teens were stopped by Shawano police early Friday in what turned out to be a stolen car. Officer Heidi Cartwright pulled the car over on Cleveland Street shortly after 12 a.m. for having expired registration tags, according to the police report.
Mayor’s race could be 8-way primary
The race to replace Shawano Mayor Lorna Marquardt has already gotten crowded only a few days into the filing season for the spring election. Four potential candidates have filed campaign registration papers for the office, while another four have picked up campaign forms but not yet filed the paperwork. None of them will be official candidates until they’ve collected at least 50 signatures and turned in their nomination papers.
Packers riding high after stunning win in Detroit
Packers coach Mike McCarthy left no doubt about where the team’s no-time-left win in Detroit stands for him. “Outside of the Super Bowl (title in the 2010 season), to me, that’s our greatest regular-season win,” said McCarthy, who’s in his 10th year as Green Bay’s coach. “I couldn’t sleep, so I sat up and watched it a few times on TV,” he added Friday, less than 24 hours after the stunning victory.
College plans to restore lake retreat
A scenic Shawano Lake retreat popular with school groups, nature lovers and private parties could soon get a makeover where it matters most — at the water’s edge. Michael J. Kretschmann, 26, of Shawano, passed on to the spirit world on Tuesday, Nov. 24, due to complications from head trauma earlier in the year. Mike was born in 1989 in Watertown.
