The most beloved holiday story of all time has to be “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. In the days leading up to Christmas vacation, I read it aloud with my Kaukauna middle school students every year from 1982 to 2001. I still know it almost by heart. Dickens is a challenge to read, but even my least capable learners liked it. They loved watching the movie starring George C. Scott, by far the best film adaptation of the story.

The Oconto Falls Area Ambulance Service and its service director, Patrick Ahlgrim, have been honored with special awards by the Wisconsin EMS Association (WEMSA). The local service has been named 2023 WEMSA Service of the Year in recognition of its “exceptional contributions to the field of EMS,” and Ahlgrim has been named 2023 WEMSA Support Person of the Year. The city of Shawano’s taxi service could be raising its fares as the Shawano Common Council approved annual agreements Dec.

The Shawano School District will be using a new system to oversee all computer devices owned by it after the Shawano School Board approved a deal with Gaggle Safety Management on Dec. 11. Using the services is expected to cost $20,778 for the first year and about $18,000 annually after that. The system is expected to flag concerning content on school-issued accounts for review and block potentially harmful content.

Water rates for average residential customers of the Shawano Water and Sewer Utility will increase by 23%, or $5.43, monthly effective Dec.

The Shawano County IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is recruiting volunteers for the upcoming tax filing season. VITA sites prepare tax returns each year for low- to moderate-income taxpayers at no cost.
