Christmas bird counts and last-minute gift ideas

Although it’s been unseasonably warm a few weeks before Christmas, those winter doldrums are looming on the horizon for us sportsmen and sportswomen. The gun-deer season was abnormally quiet for me and many of the hunters I talked to. I saw just a few deer and nothing within gun range. I’m used to hunting the late season, though, and will be out enjoying the Holiday Hunt (Dec. 24 to Jan. 1) for antlerless deer in Waupaca County.

Candle shop mystery falls a bit short
I won’t say that “At the Scent of the Crime” by Melrose McFadden was a disappointment, but I must note that the story was sadly simplistic. The story is set during Fall Haven’s annual Winter Festival. It is cold enough to require a jacket, with only a dusting of snow on the ground.

Menominee mark 50 years of restoration of tribal status
December 22, 2023, will mark the 50th anniversary of the Menominee Indian Tribe’s Restoration from the federal policy of Termination. The U.S. Congress passed the Menominee Termination Act in 1954 but it did not take effect until April 30, 1961.

Police step up efforts to bust drunk drivers
The Shawano Police Department and the Shawano County and Menominee County sheriff’s departments are stepping up enforcement to get impaired drivers off the roads this holiday season through the annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over holiday enforcement campaign that goes until Jan.

Shawano hockey team gets first two wins
Shawano/Bonduel extended its winning streak to two with a 9-4 win over Chequamegon/Phillips/Butternut on Dec. 16 in Park Falls. Chequamegon took an early 2-0 lead in the first period before Cam Schroeder put Shawano on the board at 5:41 to make it 2-1 in favor of the home team going into the second period. Chequamegon scored at 0:40 to go up 3-1. That’s when Shawano lit up the board.

Shawano County OKs study of future needs
Earlier this year, the Shawano County Board of Supervisors was presented with an in-depth study of the condition of the courthouse, heating plant, sheriff’s department and jail. Now, the public property committee wants a study aimed more at the future needs of the county. A $2,500 contract with The Samuels Group was authorized by the committee at its Dec.

Bob Jones University Joshua Stauff, of Abrams, was among approximately 800 Bob Jones University students named to the fall 2023 dean’s list. The dean’s list recognizes students who earn a 3-3.74 grade point average during the semester.
