There will be at least one new face on the Shawano Common Council in 2024 as the new election season starts to take form. Lisa Hoffman, who represents the fourth aldermanic district, will not be running for a new term. She has filed papers of non-candidacy, and it was announced by City Clerk Lesley Nemetz at the Nov. 13 council meeting. Hoffman declined to comment on why she is not running for another term.

The Shawano City-County Airport could soon have a new owner – sort of. Shawano County officials are weighing the option of turning over the airport 100% to the city of Shawano. Currently, the two governments share costs for airport operations, and a joint commission that has jurisdiction for the construction, improvement, equipment, maintenance and operation of the airport. “I don’t see any benefit at all coming out of the airport for the county

Shawano’s boys wrestling team earned a fourth-place finish at the Holiday Classic it hosted Dec. 16. Drake Herm captured the championship at the 144-pound weight class. “Drake is a hard worker, a great kid and an outstanding teammate,” coach Mike Homan said. “I really like the way he attacks people from the neutral position.

Shawano’s girls wrestlers were aggressive against multiple schools and captured first place at their own Holiday Classic on Dec. 16. Jenna Moede wrestled well and took first place in her finals match with a fall in 3:52. Gwyn Hermann took second place after a close match in the finals. “Gwyn continues to improve and wrestle hard,” coach Mike Homan said. “Jenna went 4-0 on the day with four pins.

The “Spotlight” in Abrams Spotlight Productions Inc. (ASPI) needs some brightening. The community theater organization launched its Light the Way capital campaign on Dec. 1, seeking donations to replace the theatrical lighting at the Nancy Byng Community Theater, 5852 Maple St., Abrams. The campaign’s challenge urges 296 people to donate $10 by opening night of “Oklahoma!” on March 14.

Four players scored in double digits, but the valiant comeback effort by the Oconto Falls boys basketball team came up one point short in a 71-70 loss to Peshtigo in non-conference action Dec. 16. Peshtigo led 36-26 at the half. Oconto Falls’ 44-35 second half brought them within a point of a tied game and forced overtime. J.J. Pytleski scored 17 points including a trio of 3-pointers. Jameson Beaman had 16 points including a pair of 3-pointers.

Oconto Falls’ girls basketball team won 63-32 in a non-conference victory over Peshtigo on Dec. 16. The Panthers are 5-2 overall. Bonduel leads conference In a battle for the lead in the Central Wisconsin East Conference, Bonduel declared victory and first place Dec. 15 with a 57-31 win over Weyauwega-Fremont.

Karen G. Maxey, 79, of Sheboygan, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023, at Aurora Medical Center-Sheboygan surrounded by family. Karen was born Dec. 24, 1943, in Algoma, to the late Ralph (Evelyn) and Grayce (Post) Haack. On April 16, 1983, she married Jack Maxey Sr. She enjoyed the patients she cared for at Morningside as a nursing assistant for 13 years. For over 23 years, Karen also worked as a professional seamstress at Anthony Corporation.
