To the editor:
I am afraid that two brothers, David and Charles Koch, are out to undermine democracy as we know it. Their ultra-conservative special interest group, Americans for Prosperity, has already spent $30 million on television ads, some of which has gone to Gov. Walker’s re-election campaign.
Now, with the recent Supreme Court ruling, they can spend even more to influence voters.
The Koch brothers, worth more than $80 billion, have also created or supported organizations active in almost every area of public life: the law, education, health care, economics, academia, the environment and climate change, state legislative initiatives (aligning themselves with the tea party Republicans), media and veterans’ needs.
Their goals are to do away with legislation that protects the interests of working families, the elderly, the children, the sick and the poor. They want a political system in which the super-rich buy elections while, at the same time, fewer low-income and working people are able to vote. They own much of the economy. Now, they want to own the government.
A rally is being held in front of the Shawano County Courthouse on July 23 from 4-6 p.m. Those of us who don’t want billionaires controlling our lives should come to this rally. This is a first step in bringing awareness to others.
