Robert Michael Beck, 90, of Keshena, joined his wife, Shirley, in heaven on Tuesday, April 1, 2014. Bob passed away at Shawano Medical Center, Shawano.
Bob was born April 14, 1923, in West Bend, the son of Michael and Amanda (Schacht) Beck. He attended Holy Angels Catholic Grade School and graduated from West Bend High School in June 1942. He enlisted in the Army on Dec. 7, 1943, and was discharged on April 29, 1946. He was a corporal and served in the 30th Division, 119th Infantry Regiment, Company K. He received a Good Conduct medal, two Battle Stars and a Purple Heart for bravery while serving in northern France. Bob married Shirley Meta Roell on Oct. 25, 1958, in Wauwatosa. Bob worked at American Motors-Chrysler before retiring to Keshena.
Bob was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Keshena. In retirement, Bob enjoyed his dogs, bowling, fishing and canoeing on Legend Lake with Shirley. Bob’s biggest thrills were being married to Shirley, his forever wife, and Bill Mazeroski’s ninth-inning home run that beat the Yankees in the seventh game of the 1960 World Series in Pittsburgh.
Bob and Shirley will both be sadly missed, especially by their beloved nieces and nephews who would affectionately refer to them as their favorite aunt and uncle.
Bob is survived by a brother, Edward Beck, of Decatur, Ill., two brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Frank Beck; and his wife of 45 years, Shirley.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Swedberg Funeral Home, Shawano, with the Rev. David Barrett officiating. Visitation will be held at the Swedberg Funeral Home on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made in Bob’s name to the Wounded Veterans.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staffs at Shawano Medical Center and Birch Hill Care Center for the care and compassion shown to Bob during his stay.
