• Cody W. Lawe, 26, Green Bay, pleaded guilty Jan. 9 to felony bail jumping, and misdemeanor counts of possessing illegally obtained prescription drugs and disorderly conduct. Bolssen, 47, an inmate at Stanley Correctional Institution, on a charge of the repeated sexual assault of the same child, in connection with incidents that allegedly occurred in 2020. This year, let’s make and fulfill a New Year’s resolution to save the Great Lakes and decommission Line 5. Line 5, owned and operated by Canadian company Enbridge, carries crude oil across Wisconsin, Michigan, and through the Great Lakes. Despite the journey this oil takes on Wisconsin and Michigan’s soil and waterways, there is little to no gain for Wisconsinites. Yet, we face an alarming environmental crisis because of Line 5.

In 2022, domestic violence claimed 96 lives in Wisconsin. That’s one death every 3.8 days, and an increase of 20% from 2021. This is unacceptable and completely avoidable. We have the power to protect survivors and prevent domestic violence. As a champion for survivors of domestic violence, I know we can do more to aid in the prevention of horrific abuse toward women, children and other marginalized groups in our community.

The Shawano Common Council signed off on bids Jan. 10 for over $2.5 million in street reconstruction projects. Dorner Inc. won the bid for the city’s regular slate of street projects, working on South Lafayette Street from Sunset Avenue to West Lieg Avenue, East Fifth Street from North Main Street to North Hamlin Street, and another stretch of South Lafayette Street from West Lieg Avenue to West Wescott Avenue.

Keshena Primary School has been awarded a $15,000 grant from TC Energy’s social impact program, Build Strong. The grant will support the school’s social emotional learning (SEL) efforts for Menominee families and students. “We are so excited for the opportunity to bring more resources to the students and families of the Menominee Indian School District,” said Superintendent Wendell Waukau.
