The Shawano Field Committee is recommending to the Shawano Common Council on Feb. 29 that Sommers Construction Company handle the replacement of crumbling sidewalks in 2024. Sommers, a company based in Shiocton, had the lowest bid out of five companies, asking for $30,600 to do the work the city requested.

Myrna J. McKay, 82, of the Town of Belle Plaine, passed away Wednesday morning, Feb. 28, 2024, at the Greentree Health and Rehabilitation Center in Clintonville. Myrna Jean Bittorf was born on Sept. 1, 1941, in Sturgeon Bay as the daughter of the late Ewald and Erna (Benke) Bittorf. Myrna graduated from Shawano High School in 1959 and was united in marriage to James McKay on Nov.

Richard “Dick” Hansen, 87, of Wittenberg, died on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024, at North Central Health Care in Wausau. Dick was born on June 25, 1936, the son of Oscar and Bernice (Thomas) Hansen. Dick married Linda Kay, and together, they had four children. They later divorced. Dick attended Stevens Point College where he got his bachelor’s degree in education. He later went to UW-Madison, where he achieved his master’s.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) encourages the public to sign up for the upcoming Run for the Trees: Happy Little 5K. The race, inspired by artist Bob Ross, is a virtual event with proceeds benefiting tree health and protection across the state. All skill levels and abilities are encouraged to participate in the Happy Little 5K.

Marlon Curtis White Wing “Hųk nįkcąk” (The Child of The Chief), 71, of Shawano, died on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024, at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital in Green Bay. Marlon was born on May 19, 1952, in Lyndon Station, the son of Raymond and Elizabeth (Stacy) White Wing. In Marlon’s younger years, he attended Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas, Morningside University in Sioux City, Iowa, and the College of Menominee Nation in Keshena.

Harold Dean Tester, 80, of Watauga County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Feb. 17, 2024, in Oconto Falls. He was born on Feb. 13, 1944, to the late Henry Clay and Vertie Alice Tester. Pa or Tennessee, as he was also known, served in the U.S. Army for one year and 10 months, demonstrating his commitment to his country.
