While relating a fascinating piece of family history, my father told me the decision to emigrate to America began taking shape for my ancestors John George Holzschuh and his wife, Anna Maria, in 1850. 4-H member from Krakow wins $1,000 scholarship
The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation awarded Amber Seitz, of Krakow, a $1,000 Oscar G. and Mary M. Woelfel Memorial Scholarship. Seitz has been active in her 4-H Club in Oconto County for 10 years. Her projects are focused on livestock and agriculture, showing swine, sheep and dairy cows at the county fair and state fair.

WASP swimmers win home meet
Wittenberg Area Swim Program coaches Brenna Opper, Kaylee Gilmeister, Laura Gilmeister and Lauren Baar led their swimmers to a team victory when they hosted the Summer Social Swim Meet on June 7 at the Darwin E. Smith Aquatic Center. Kaydence Crick, Aislyn Sauter, Peyton Crick and Aubrey Wierzba won the mixed 11-12 200-yard medley relay in 2:22.35.
Wet fields continue to hinder fieldwork
Wisconsin had 3.3 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending June 30, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Wet fields throughout much of the state continue to hinder fieldwork. Topsoil moisture condition rated 48% adequate and 52% surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 59% adequate and 41% surplus. Corn emergence was 94% complete.

Lorraine Irene (Hoefs) Gentz, age 99, passed away Friday morning, June 28, 2024, at Serenity Gardens, Gillett. She was born Jan. 7, 1925, to the late Harold (Harry) and Irene (Pitt) Hoefs at Zachow. She graduated from Shawano High School in 1943. On June 14, 1944, she married the love of her life, Morton Gentz at Zion Lutheran Church, Zachow. She was employed by Pauly Cheese Co. in Zachow.
