A nonprofit organization is being formed to help fundraising efforts for a new playground at Zippel Park in Gillett. Brian Westfahl, Shawano County’s coroner, reported three suicides in August, nearly one-third of all so far this year. His monthly report indicated there have been 10 deaths by suicide in the county in 2024. Westfahl also reported one traffic fatality in August, making a total of three for the year. A tender for the Wittenberg Fire Department is already showing signs of wear and tear, one year after the village received it. Sharon Beversdorf, spokeswoman for the department, told the Wittenberg Village Board on Sept. 3 that the tender vehicle the village is still paying off started to leak water in June, noting that it was noticeable during one of the parades in which the fire department took part.

Shawano County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Ostrowski has been chosen as the new K-9 handler for the department. He will travel to Canada later this year for a two-week training session with his new dog. The Shawano County Public Safety Committee authorized his trip at its Sept. 4 meeting. Lt. Nick Prey said the county has already purchased a couple of dogs from the same vendor, Tony Pallotta, of Toronto.

Theresa A. Schulta, 74, Schofield, passed away on Sept. 5, 2024, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born May 28, 1950, in Wausau, daughter of the late Joseph and Dolores (Beske) Ogiba. She was united in marriage on April 22, 1972, to Michael A. Schulta in Rothschild.

John and Corine Kulas, of Galloway, went to their heavenly home, surrounded by family in their home. Corine died on Monday, Sept. 2, 2024, at the age of 86. John joined Corine on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024, at the age of 89. Corine was born on Oct, 18, 1937, in Oshkosh, the daughter of George and Wanda (Billington) Schuster.
