Why I Give Thanks

As the president of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians, I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve others and use my platform to advocate for the needs of those who are sometimes unable to do so for themselves. We are in the season of gratitude. Thanksgiving is more complicated for the people at the center of the Thanksgiving story, Native Americans. There are 576 Native American tribal nations in the U.S.

When I was first asked to write about what I am thankful for, I will admit that it was difficult to choose one specific thing. Many people who know me will acknowledge the fact that I tend to be a sentimentalist. I, however, believe that it is my love and passion for history and the arts that has affected this.

Why I Give Thanks
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I find myself reflecting on the essence of gratitude, and the first thought that surfaces is a quote that has always lingered in my mind: “When you have your health, you have 1,000 dreams. When you don’t, you have one.” This simple yet profound statement encapsulates the core of why we should give thanks, especially for our health.

Gillett board tentatively OKs Ireland trip
The Gillett School Board has given its tentative approval for a student trip to Ireland during the summer of 2026. The proposal was brought to the board by agriculture teacher Jacob Timm during its Nov. 21 monthly meeting. Timm is working with EF Travel, a company that partners with schools to provide a variety of educational tours.

• Amanda J. Reiter, 40, Hatley, pleaded no contest July 23 to six counts of misdemeanor bail jumping and a misdemeanor count of operating a motor vehicle while her license was revoked. Two of the bail jumping counts were amended from felonies in a plea agreement. Judge Katherine Sloma on Nov. 8 levied fines and sentenced her to 45 days in county jail. • Charles K. Slaten, 52, Menominee Falls, pleaded no contest Nov.

Boxing coming to Menominee Casino Resort
Members of the Menominee Indian Boxing Club will be among those stepping into the ring when International Boxing presents Indian Country on Dec. 7 at Menominee Casino Resort, W277 Highway 47-55, Keshena. Doors will open at 6 p.m., with the show beginning at 7 p.m. The boxing matches will take place in the Five Clans Ballroom at the casino.
