Shawano Police Department Sept. 5 Police logged 22 incidents, including the following: Suspicious — Police responded to a complaint of a sleeping man with three dogs at Huckleberry Harbor. He was told dogs were not allowed there and advised to move along. Vandalism — All American Mineral, 120 E. Richmond St., reported a vandalism incident. Arrest — A male subject was taken into custody at the Probation and Parole offices, 1340 E.

The proposed new Shawano County employee handbook could be eliminating some of extra pay workers negotiated in union contracts. Maintenance Director Steve Dreher brought the issue of on-call pay to the Public Property Committee’s attention Friday.

A crossing guard eliminated from the city’s budget as of the new school year has become a hot topic on local Facebook pages and will be discussed Monday by the city’s Finance Committee. The $6,500 per year crossing guard at Main and Center streets was initially cut completely from the city budget last November.

The Shawano Common Council recessed a special meeting Friday without any decision on filling the vacant post of public works director and will reconvene Monday for further discussion. Three finalists for the job met with city officials Friday for a final round of interviews.

A funeral service for John Michael Kostrzak of Horseshoe Bend, Ark., will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at the Assembly of God Church, Horseshoe Bend, with Brother Shepard and Pastor Berlen Walker officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time at the church. John passed away Sept. 6, 2013, in Mountain Home, Ark., at the age of 82. He was born April 8, 1931, in Manawa, the son of Louis and Polly Clapps Kostrzak.

Donald K. Peterson, of Napa, Calif., passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at Queen of The Valley Medical Center in Napa. He was born Sept. 28, 1921, in Oconto Falls to Frank and Margaret (Kadlec) Peterson. He graduated from Marinette High School on May 31, 1938. He was married on Nov. 4, 1944, in Bonduel to Ione Mitchell, who preceded him in death on Sept. 18, 2005. He was a member of St.

Sometimes when I look out my window, I think it’s snowing. Then I realize that it is only leaves coming down from the trees. Once in a while it is one lonely leaf spiraling its way down to fall quietly onto the earth. It is hard to deny that autumn is settling in all around us. The past couple of weeks, I have noticed splashes of color here and there in the trees.

Every now and then my daughter introduces her dad and me to reality shows on cable. The first one was “Duck Dynasty,” which has become a family favorite. I enjoy the Robertson clan, love what they stand for and usually laugh out loud at their antics or cry at their sentiments, and during most episodes, do both. Especially touching is the prayer at the family dinner table, closing every show.

Tony Wagner enjoys the projects and the kids in 4-H. He has been a 4-H leader for 39 years. Wagner grew up in Green Valley, graduating from Pulaski High School. After graduation he farmed for 31 years. Wagner had 25 cows and 120 acres on the farm now worked by his son, Hank, who has 650 cows and over 800 acres. Wagner and his wife, Judy, have been married 53 years.
