Matty Mathison was cruising through the Shawano County countryside on one of her regular 20-mile bike rides when the idea popped into her head. One of the routes took her past several of the barn quilts erected as part of the Shawano Country Barn Quilt Project. She enjoyed seeing the old barns and the barn quilt colors in the distance. “We have these beautiful barn quilts,” she told herself.

John Montoure, Ph.D., 86, of Meridian, Idaho, formerly of Shawano, died Sept. 4, 2013, in Meridian. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Sept. 23, at 11 a.m. at Hope Community Church, Shawano.

Ebba M. Kleeman Olson, 99, 0f Shawano, was welcomed into the arms of her Lord on Tuesday evening, Sept. 17, 2013. She passed away at Kindred Hearts Assisted Living Center in Shawano, where she had been a resident for the past five years. Ebba was born on Dec. 24, 1913, in Franksville, a daughter of the late Arthur Peter and Marie (Sorensen) Svendsen.

Two people were injured Thursday morning when a van collided with a pickup on state Highway 32 at Middle Drive in Angelica. The crash was still being investigated, but initial investigation indicated that a Dodge Caravan driven by a 33-year-old Green Bay man failed to yield at a stop sign on Middle Drive and continued onto Highway 32, where the van was hit by a Chevy truck driven by a 71-year-old Krakow man, according to the Shawano County Sherif

Pre-demolition work has begun on the former Country Store building on South Main Street to make way for Family Dollar’s move from East Green Bay Street. “They’re cleaning it up. Asbestos remediation, stuff like that,” Shawano Building Inspector Mike Miller said. Miller said he was not aware of any time line for the project.

Though he has attended countless meetings over the last three weeks, the new head of Shawano County Economic Progress, Inc.

A group that initially sought to raise money for a crossing guard now hopes to expand into a nonprofit organization aimed at child safety. Nathan Powell said he and the other three members of the group, all Shawano residents, are still exploring ways to raise money for a crossing guard at Center and Main streets, but decided there was no reason to stop there. “This thing has snowballed bigger than I ever thought,” Powell said.
