The Oconto Falls High School volleyball team wasn’t at the top of its game against Denmark.

At 5:28 a.m. Sept. 14, a car driven by a Suring man was traveling north on White Lake Road, town of Bagley. The vehicle veered onto the gravel shoulder, and the driver overcorrected and lost control. The car entered a ditch and struck a tree. The man was transported to a medical facility for injuries. His vehicle was extensively damaged. At 6:40 p.m. Sept.

Proceedings from Sept. 19 Julie S. Mann, 51, Oconto, entered a not guilty plea to, as a convicted felon, possessing a firearm. She was arrested Aug. 28 in Oconto. Her pretrial conference will be held Oct. 10, and a $2,500 cash bond continues. Brandon Degrand Foley-Fraser, 19, Oconto, was ordered to pay $883 in fines and court costs after he pleaded no contest to possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested May 11 in Oconto.

Suring officials are turning to a Madison-based company to improve an apartment complex in the village. The low-income tenants who live at Pioneer Villa apartments, 415 N. Mill St., have complained of a leaky roof, cockroach infestation and overall building deterioration. The building is owned by the Suring Non-Profit Housing Corporation and managed by Housing Management Services, of Oconto.

Four of the five school districts in Oconto County met or exceeded expectations of student achievement and engagement for 2012-13, as determined by the Department of Public Instruction. The report cards give each school and district an accountability score, which places them in one of five categories, from fails to meet expectations to significantly exceeds expectations.

With a near-unanimous vote, the Oconto County Board decided Thursday to borrow up to $25 million to build a law enforcement center in the heart of Oconto. The board voted 29-2 in favor of constructing the center on property adjacent to the courthouse, scrapping plans to build in the town of Little River, long considered to be the most desirable site. Colleen Lynn “Jem-E-Wan Jun De-Qua” Smith, clan mother of the Bear Clan, Ottawa Nation, 64, of Cecil, passed away Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, in Appleton. Born on Aug. 28, 1949, in Milwaukee, she was the daughter of the late Joseph B. and Lillian R (Hefele) Briggs. On Feb. 26, 1972, she was united in marriage to Jody W. Smith in Eland. While Jody was in the service, the couple traveled all over the world.
