Ready to give thanks

After going through a battle for his life over the last seven months, Tom Bartels is finally home. He spent those months in hospitals in Neenah, Shawano and Milwaukee after being diagnosed with pancreatitis. One of his doctors told Bartels he was proud that he didn’t stop fighting for his life. “A couple of times I felt I wish I could die,” said Bartels, who spent nearly all of that time flat on his back. “It was a horrible roller coaster ride,”

SAFPARC provides Thanksgiving aid
Hundreds of families that might otherwise have gone without will be able to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner Thursday thanks to the Shawano Area Food Pantry and Resource Center — and those who support it. For the fourth year in a row, the pantry has set aside the week solely for the distribution of turkeys and all the trimmings that typically go along with the holiday meal. Wildcats working to replace Hoffman
The Gresham Community High School boys basketball team is trying to fill some big shoes. Those shoes belong to Brady Hoffman, one of three graduated seniors from last year’s team, along with Tom Williams and Jaz Mohawk. Hoffman led the team in scoring (264 points, 14.7 points per game) and rebounding (203, 11.3 per game). Those marks were fifth and second in the Central Wisconsin Conference-10, respectively.

Hawks look to build tradition
A year ago Ryan Koenig took over the Shawano Community High School girls basketball program and set out to change the culture. The Hawks improved to 7-16 (4-12 Bay Conference), and the coach wants that improvement to continue. “Last year our saying was starting a tradition,” Koenig said. “Changing the culture of the program. I think we did a good job with that that first year. … This year we have to carry that on.

Sacred Heart Catholic School This week marked the end of 24 years of service to our school for Carol Aschenbrenner. She has served on our support staff as a supervisor outside and inside the lunchroom. We wish her well on her retirement. People like Carol make our school a great place to be. Hawks get first win under Kellett
A fast start and some timely shooting from the bench lifted the Shawano Community High School boys basketball team past Sheboygan North 68-51 in a nonconference game Tuesday in Shawano. Bears improve to 3-0 for season The Bonduel High School boys basketball team continued its hot start with a 55-31 win over Coleman in a nonconference game Monday in Coleman. Hunter VanderLinden led an evenly distributed attack for the Bears (3-0) with nine points. Connor Rosin and Zach Zernicke added eight points each.

Jean F. Kafura
Jean F. Kafura, 84, of Big Lake, Gresham, and formerly of Appleton, passed away Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013. Born on July 25, 1929, in Appleton, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Edith (Gerharz) Fellows. On Nov. 28, 1947, Jean was united in marriage to Frederick Kafura, who preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 2008. Jean loved the holidays, especially decorating, cooking and baking, and liked to refer to herself as a household engineer.

2 charged in marijuana grow from 3 years ago
Two people have been charged with drug-related felonies in connection with a marijuana operation discovered more than three years ago when authorities executed a search warrant for child pornography in the town of Morris. Shawn L. Hickey, 45, and Diane L. Potschaider, 55, both of Tigerton, each face a felony count of manufacture and delivery of marijuana. The search warrant was executed in May 2010.
