Judge Barbara Crabb declared Wisconsin’s ban on gay marriage unconstitutional in June, but she put her ruling on hold a week later while the state appealed. GIRLS TENNIS Losses at subsectional end Hawks’ season Shawano No. 2 singles player Isabelle Carroll was the only player to escape the first round of the WIAA Division 1 subsectional Monday at Western Racquet and Fitness Club. Carroll won her first match against Rebecca Messer, of Ashwaubenon, 6-1, 6-1.

Shawano Community High School junior Julia Beck saw her season come to an end Tuesday, shooting 100 at the WIAA Division 1 girls golf sectional at Royal Scot Golf Course in New Franken. Beck had a 49 after the first nine holes. “It was one of her better games,” Shawano coach Dean Kugler said. “She kind of knew it was going to be tough today.” The coach said Royal Scot played long Tuesday. “She just wasn’t good enough on the greens,” Kugler said.

The Shawano/Bonduel girls swimming team beat Marinette 103-67 in a Bay Conference meet Tuesday at Shawano Community High School. “It was a very solid win,” Shawano/Bonduel coach Sharon Hanson said. “This meet was fun because we kind of knew we had to change it up a little bit.” Despite some swimmers trying different events, the Hawks won nine of the 11 varsity events. “They did awesome,” Hanson said.

The Lena Seventh-day Adventist Church, 538 Harley St., Lena, recently completed a building expansion that included a fellowship hall, kitchen, children and youth classrooms, and bathrooms. The church also purchased the property next door and modified it to provide off-street parking. The public is invited to an open house from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, to tour the new facilities. Refreshments will be served.

Early morning showers did not deter a group of determined horseback riders from enjoying a day of celebration with friends and family Sept. 21 in the Machickanee Forest. Old and new members of Outback Riders Inc. gathered to celebrate their 20-year anniversary and to remember the late Randy Lucas, a founding member of the club.

The Gillett Police Department is on course for a record-setting year. The department has already surpassed the number of calls it responded to in 2013, and Police Chief Jess Keplinger expects 400 more calls before year’s end. As of Monday, the department recorded 1,229 complaints, exactly 20 more than all of 2013.
