Suring student participates in dairy science internship

Ashley Belongia, a dairy science major at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, is participating in the Growmark summer intern program. She is the daughter of Steve and Laurie Belongia, of Suring. As an intern, Belongia will spend 12 weeks working for Frontier-Servco FS in Stratford.

Fox steals the show at Lions golf outing
The 10th annual Lions Region 2 golf outing was held May 30 at DeSmidt’s Golf Course and Country Club in Crivitz. The team fielded by the Coleman-Pound Lions took top honors and the championship mugs.
Kelly Lake Triathlon anticipates record number of athletes
A record number of triathletes are expected Saturday at the Kelly Lake Triathlon, with proceeds to benefit the Shriners Hospital for Children in Chicago. “We are close to hitting our cap of 150 and should meet it by the weekend,” triathlon coordinator Roger Bloom said. “It will be the most we have ever had.” Last year, the event drew 105 competitors. Races will begin at 7:30 a.m.

Elsie L. Askenette, 58, of Keshena, started her journey to the Spirit World on Saturday afternoon, June 27, 2015, at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Milwaukee, where she had been a patient for eight days. Elsie was born on May 7, 1957, in Shawano, a daughter of the late Ralph and Evelyn (Gauthier) Haack. She attended school in Neopit and later in Shawano. On Aug. 13, 2005, she was united in marriage to Marvin “Tony” Askenette.

Indian tribe recognition process overhauled
Some Indian tribes may have a clearer path toward federal recognition under a new Obama administration rule that relaxes some requirements and speeds decision-making, potentially affecting hundreds of groups. Federal acknowledgment means a tribe is treated as a nation within a nation, able to set up its own government, legal system, and taxes and fees. Recognition also brings critical federal investments in medical care, housing and education.
