The stage at the Shawano County Fair’s junior fair building started out as a platform for animals, but by the time the weekend rolled around, it was taken over by party animals. U B the Band gave dozens of local children the opportunity to take the stage to be lead singers, guitarists and drummers to a number of popular songs.

I got rid of the boot, sort of. When I went to the doctor last week, I could imagine myself throwing the boot out the door if I got permission to do so. At the very least, I was not going to wear that cumbersome, uncomfortable thing to bed with me any longer, but the reality turned out to be very different. The doctor shared the welcome news that I could switch to wearing a shoe now.

It’s September, and I haven’t even done all the things I was going to do in August — or July, for that matter. We’re going with friends to visit mutual friends at their summer place in Minnesota next week. This mini trip could not be worked into all three couples’ calendars before now because of various appointments and other commitments.

My cell phone is with me pretty much at all times, except when I sleep. The other day, I was chopping hay and, of course, had my cell right next to me in a little carrier of sorts. This day, for one reason or another, I had not slipped it into the same compartment that I always put it into. My husband and I had just exchanged wagons.

Packers defensive lineman Letroy Guion plans to stay in Green Bay during his three-game suspension to work out and get ready for the rest of the season. The NFL announced the suspension last week, saying the eight-year pro violated the league’s policy of substance abuse.

The Pella Eagles 4-H Club began in 1998 with 12 members, including the sons of current co-leaders Lynn Tober-Steinke and Julie Bishop. The boys were old enough to be Cloverbuds. Now the Pella Eagles have more than 40 members who are very active in their club and in their community. “Our club motto is ‘Building future leaders,’” Tober-Steinke said.

Gloria Bonnin and her daughter, April VanGheem, have been taking care of the antiques at the Shawano County Fair for five years. They have been entering their antiques at the fair for 18 years and for several year have gone to Gold Rush Days in Minnesota, a large four-day antique fest. Gloria Bonnin was born in the town of Hartland and graduated from Bonduel High School.
