Dunnam powers Hawks comeback attempt

When the Shawano Community High School girls volleyball team needed someone to step up Tuesday, senior middle hitter Erika Dunnam was there. After Shawano lost the first two sets and fell behind 16-21 in the third set, Erika Dunnam recorded five of the next nine points, two blocks and three kills to push the match to four sets. Spark plugs vary as Packers hit on all cylinders

SCHS to induct 4 members to Hall of Fame
Shawano Community High School will induct four new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame at noon Saturday in the school commons as part of the annual homecoming events. Anton Anderson (1932-1936), Fred Opperman (1953-1957), Dean Mauel (1978-1982) and Jim Krenger (1984-1988) constitute the 16th class of inductees. Anderson was a three-sport athlete for the Shawano Indians, earning nine combined varsity letters in football, basketball and track.

Vivien L. Hoffmann
Vivien Lea Hoffmann, 71, of the town of Belle Plaine, passed away on Monday, Sept. 21, 2015, due to complications from surgery. Vivien was born to the late Francis and Beatrice (Finch) Lehman on Sept. 8, 1944, in Clintonville. On May 21, 1980, at St. Martin Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine, Vivien was united in marriage to Dennis Wayne Hoffmann. The couple made their home in the Shawano area on Snuggle Valley Farm.

Wayne O. “Lil Orv” Bistoff, 59, of Shawano, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday morning, Sept. 15, 2015, at home. Wayne was born March 6, 1956, in Shawano, a son of the late Orvin and Gloria (Norton) Bistoff. He attended the Shawano schools. He then entered the United States Navy.

Frank R. Smith
Frank R. Smith, 91, of Shawano, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015, in Shawano. Frank was born in Milwaukee on Aug. 25, 1924, to the late Frank A. and Agnes (Podkomorski) Smith. He enlisted in the United States Army and courageously served from 1943 until 1946, earning the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and many other military honors. On March 4, 1944, Frank was united in marriage to Elaine Nelson.

Health board keeps public out
With Shawano County facing its first cases of tuberculosis in nearly 10 years, members of the county health board are coming under question for discussing the issue behind closed doors. Bystanders called heroes in river rescue
Steve Grover was driving to a restaurant with family members about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when he heard a noise and then spotted something most unusual in the Wolf River. What Grover and other bystanders did over the next few minutes might have saved the life of a young woman whose car somehow landed upside down in the river. “I saw the vehicle floating,” Grover recalled Wednesday.
