There is something about this time of year that brings on a bit of scariness. A while back it was the refrigerator that quit working. I was a little concerned, because things always seem to come in at least threes.
But, after a couple of weeks passed, I thought maybe this time only one thing was going to quit working. That assumption was trashed when my sleep machine started beeping. Button pushed, mask on, air blowing, my head going down to the pillow. My body was snuggling down under the covers, eyelids preparing to close, and then “beep, beep, beep” and no air.
That brought my sleepy self awake in a hurry. When the beeps began, I jiggled the plug, and somehow it restarted, and my once again sleepy self was allowed to sleep serenely in peace. At first I was in denial and thought it was nothing serious, but when it continued into the second week, I decided it was time to call the expert.
I had just seen my doctor, and knew I was supposed to keep using it, but dreaded the thought of it not working at all. I was told that since it was now 5 years old, the machine could be replaced.
One week later that dreaded night came; nothing I tried got it to work. I worried that I wouldn’t be able to sleep without it, but I did. I called again the next day and made an appointment to bring it in to see if it can be fixed. Or perhaps I can get one on loan to use while I wait for the health insurance to approve a new machine.
One other thing happened last weekend. It was cooler outside, and part of my house was cooler inside also. I had the thermostats set as usual in the colder weather: 65 in the bedroom and 70 in the living room.
One night the bedroom stayed warm to its setting, but in the morning the living room was very cold. Just as a test, I put the thermostat to 80 — still no sign of heat, so I plugged in the electric heater to take the chill off and vowed to call the repairman on Monday.
The next night I felt a chill in bed and had to get up to throw an extra blanket on to stay warm. When I got up a bit later to start my day, I expected to find the living room cold also, but was pleasantly surprised, and puzzled, to find it warm and toasty.
I don’t understand anything about the heating system in my home, other than to know it is hot water heat and to change the filter. So, I kept my vow and called for repair. Of course, it was warmer on Monday, so when I called, I noted that it could wait, but that I felt things needed to be checked over before the real cold weather came.
So, this is the time of year when things seem to act a little scary. Appliances break down, and other items in my home don’t work as expected. However, one by one, all these haunting problems will be solved.
I am prepared for Halloween next week, with an ample supply of trick-or-treat candy.
