Preseason hunting event draws a crowd

Deer hunting season is just around the corner, and Shawano County has got the fever again. Buck Fever Night, a community tradition going back some 40 years, brought out an enthusiastic crowd Tuesday night of hunters and non-hunters alike. Homeless shelter opens doors
More than 150 people turned out Saturday for the open house and blessing of an emergency homeless shelter in Shawano. Shawano Area Matthew 25 opened the doors of Sam’s House for public tours of the shelter at 213 E. Green Bay St. after nearly three years of working to make the shelter a reality. “It’s taken a lot of work, and I’m just tickled to be where we are now,” said Muffy Culhane, president of the board of SAM 25.

Escaped fugitive caught in Shawano
A 21-year-old man who escaped from the Winnebago Correctional Center last month was arrested Monday night near the city of Shawano, according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department. Leland C. Larock escaped from the minimum-security facility in Winnebago on Oct. 9, along with Austin W. Reynolds, 21. Authorities captured Reynolds Oct.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Bears best Tigers in season opener Emily Sorenson’s 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists led Bonduel to its first victory of the season against Gillett Tuesday, 74-42. Kailee Pedersen and Taylor Weier also each tallied double-digit scores, with 12 and 10, respectively.

Martell signs to swim at UW-Green Bay
After finishing in 15th place in the 100 breaststroke at the WIAA Division 1 state meet on Saturday in Madison, Bonduel senior Clare Martell officially committed Tuesday to swim at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay next fall. Martell, who verbally committed to the program last fall, finished her high school swim career with a time of 1:07.11, the fastest time of the season. “I was glad I got my season’s best time,” Martell said.

Hawks’ press creates easy opportunites
A few empty possessions early on in Shawano’s season-opening girls basketball game against Sturgeon Bay made it seem to be a low-scoring affair. Delores P. Leindecker
Delores P. Leindecker, of Gillett, formerly of Merrill, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015, at Serenity Gardens under the care of Hospice Services. Greg A. Anderson
Greg A. Anderson, 62, Oconto Falls, died peacefully Saturday evening, Nov. 14, 2015, at a Green Bay area health care facility. He was born Oct. 19, 1953, in Eau Claire to Myron and Geraldine (Conlon) Anderson. Greg grew up in Eau Claire where he graduated from Regis High School.
