Shawano County awarded emergency food, shelter funds

Shawano County has been chosen to receive $10,496 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county by a FEMA national board. A local board made up of community representatives and facilitated by the United Way of Shawano County will determine how the funds are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area. Parents frustrated about school bus route change

Bahr hearing canceled due to arrest elsewhere
A scheduled preliminary hearing April 25 for Tracy Bahr, 40, of Cecil, in the Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court had to be called off because he is currently in jail in Brown County facing a slew of charges there. Bahr’s attorney, Christopher Froelich, told Judge William Kussel Jr.

Annual chamber fundraiser set for June 25
The Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce’s annual golf outing is planned this year for June 25. The annual fundraiser’s 2024 theme is “Golf Around the World.” Teams are limited, so spot reservations must be made by June 7. Keshena man indicted for kidnapping, intent to murder
A Keshena man was indicted April 24 in federal court with kidnapping, assault with the intent to murder and domestic assault by strangulation. According to the indictment, John V. Miller Jr., 42, allegedly strangled a former girlfriend March 29 until she was unconscious and assaulted her with the intent to kill her.

Joining forces to reclaim Menominee language
The College of Menominee Nation (CMN) has announced a collaborative effort between CMN’s Teacher Education Department and the Menominee Tribe’s Language and Culture Commission (MLCC) to strengthen the Menominee tribal language reclamation efforts. MLCC created an immersion language nest program housed at Menominee Day Care/Early Head Start Services and Head Start seven years ago.

Lead contamination impacts children especially
Lead has been in the news often in the past several months with reports about contaminated food products and concerns about popular drinkware. Children who are exposed often do not look sick, but even small amounts of lead can harm the brain and cause learning and behavior difficulties. “It’s important for parents to know the risks and take steps to protect kids from lead exposure,” said Dr. Michelle Gerow, a ThedaCare pediatrician.
