Leah Nordin isn’t the only member of her family with a basketball background.

The Shawano Community High School senior has spent the last four years raising eyebrows as one of the state’s top players and will head to the University of Wisconsin later this year to suit up for the Badgers’ women’s team.

Area high schools are sending a big contingent of boys and girls to the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament in Madison, as 16 wrestlers from six programs are making the trip to the Kohl Center to compete for a state title.

The tournament will get underway Feb. 26 and wrap up with championship matches Feb. 28.

Bonduel 71, The Prairie School 40

Ryan Westrich led the Bonduel boys basketball team with 22 points in a 71-40 win over The Prairie School.

Quinn Wesenberg and Carter Moesch each scored 16 points for the Bears, which improved to 20-3 overall.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood 69, Stratford 31

Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s girls basketball team closed out the regular season with a 69-31 win over Stratford.

The Chargers are CWC-East conference champion at 14-0 and 24-0 overall.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood led from start to finish, including a 37-15 lead at halftime.

Bay Conference opponents have been a thorn in the side of the Shawano girls basketball team all season long.

That thorn showed up again Feb. 19, as the Hawks ended up on the short end of a 71-55 score to Xavier, which wrapped up the regular season with a win on its home court in Appleton.

The next people to be elected Shawano County sheriff, clerk of courts and coroner will see a significant boost in pay compared to what those officials are making today.

Supervisors on the executive committee voted to increase the salaries to be more in line with comparable counties. By law, they must set salaries now for the next four-year term for sheriff, clerk of courts and coroner.
