Shawano City-County Library will observe National Library Week from April 13-19. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.
In the mid-1950s, research showed that Americans were spending less on books and more on radios, televisions and musical instruments. Concerned that Americans were reading less, the ALA and the American Book Publishers formed a nonprofit citizens organization called the National Book Committee in 1954. The committee’s goals ranged from “encouraging people to read in their increasing leisure time” to “improving incomes and health” and “developing strong and happy family life.”
We are pleased to use this time to showcase our library with the various materials and activities we have to offer and the ongoing changes that have taken place.
The Friends of Shawano County Libraries will sponsor several events during the week, such as National Library Workers Day on Tuesday, a day for library staff, users, administrators and Friends groups to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers; National Bookmobile Day, on Wednesday, a day to recognize the contributions of our nation’s bookmobiles and the dedicated professionals who make quality bookmobile outreach possible in their communities; and Celebrate Teen Literature Day, on Thursday, aimed at raising awareness that young adult literature is a vibrant, growing genre with much to offer today’s teens.
In addition to these events, Library at 7 will host a night of music with the Shawano High School jazz band on Wednesday evening, April 16, at 7 p.m. in the main area of the library. Plan to attend to hear some great music in a comfortable setting. On Thursday, April 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., join DIY Crafts & More to make tin can planters.
We hope you can take some time during this week to see for yourself what a great library we have in Shawano.
We are also very excited for the return of bestselling author Brian Freeman. As part of his tour promoting his novel “The Cold Nowhere,” Freeman will be at the library on Monday, April 21, starting at 7 p.m. Shawano is home to his all-new Jonathan Stride e-novella, “Turn to Stone.” He’ll be talking about how the Shawano setting inspired this novella — and will do a special reading from it. Copies of the e-novella are available for checkout at the library.
