Batter up! Athletes in Suring and Gillett are scheduled to team up for baseball and softball next spring and in 2016, after both districts approved a two-year co-op agreement.
The agreement will be forwarded to officials of the Marinette & Oconto Conference for approval and then to the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association.
The Gillett School Board unanimously approved the agreement Thursday, about a week after Suring granted its unanimous approval.
According to the contract, the districts will split costs 60/40, with Gillett paying the larger share. The estimated annual cost of each sport is $7,000.
Proponents of the agreement said it brings new opportunities for Suring students, who previously did not participate in the two sports. It will also be a boost for Gillett, where declining participation put the future of the program in jeopardy.
The agreement allows for some home games to be played in the Suring area, as long as the fields are WIAA compliant.
Suring School does not have softball or baseball facilities, so baseball games are proposed at the town of How field and softball games at the town of Breed or village of Suring field.
The Gillett games will be played at the Orby Jones Family Sports Complex in Gillett.
