The Gillett School District will request bids for contracted food service to determine if the district can benefit financially by outsourcing its meals.
Superintendent Todd Carlson said the district’s food service program has been in the red the last couple of years, and a contracted service could reverse that trend. According to Carlson, it may be beneficial to work with a company that has access to larger buys, varied menus and an understanding of the federal food requirements.
“We are very early on in the process and at this point are not sure if we will have any changes,” Carlson said.
School Board members Cliff Gerbers and John Timm were appointed to a food service ad hoc committee to consider bids, which are due May 16. Carlson predicted two or three companies would submit proposals. If a firm is selected, contracted service would begin with the start of the 2014-15 school year.
The district has a food service staff of two full-time and several part-time employees. On average, the district serves 83 breakfasts and 300 lunches per day.
“We are interested in growing these numbers,” Carlson said.
