Dawn Nelson has stepped down as varsity girls volleyball coach at Gillett Secondary School.
She compiled an 82-79-4 record over seven years with the Tigers, including three straight winning seasons from 2007-09 and a share of the Marinette and Oconto Conference championship in 2009.
Nelson’s best season came in her second season, in 2008, when Gillett posted a 17-5 record. She was runner-up in balloting for M&O coach of the year in 2009.
Gillett was 8-13 (6-10 M&O) last season.
Nelson could not be reached for comment.
“She has done a very nice job as head volleyball coach with the Gillett teams being very competitive in the conference throughout her coaching time,” Superintendent Todd Carlson said. “Having the consistency that has been a part of the volleyball program over the past seven years will be very difficult to replace.”
Carlson said he believes Nelson resigned to dedicate more time to her family and community.
“It is my understanding that Dawn has family and job commitments and the coaching responsibilities were becoming too much,” Carlson said. “She continues to volunteer in numerous youth and school activities.”
It is the school’s second top coaching departure in a month. William Greenwood II resigned earlier following one season as the varsity boys basketball coach.
“We are in the process of looking for replacements for both volleyball and basketball, have talked to several individuals and are hoping to have some decisions soon,” Carlson said.
