Elmer Giese, 87, Green Bay, formerly of Suring, died peacefully Monday morning, July 21, 2014, at an area hospital. He was born Jan. 27, 1927, in the town of Breed to Louis and Myrtle (Ramsdell) Giese.
Elmer grew up in the Suring area, where he attended school and learned to become an auto mechanic. As a young man, he served in the U.S. Air Force, 5th Airborne Division, during World War II.
On Aug. 6, 1949, he married Laverne Nicholas in Abrams. Following their marriage the couple lived in Suring before moving to Milwaukee in 1957, where Elmer worked for Badger Pontiac until moving back to the area in 1967.
Elmer was employed as an auto mechanic at the Co-op in Suring, then Parsons Chevrolet in Oconto Falls before going to work at Peterson Ford until his retirement.
Elmer enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, golfing and being with his large family and many friends. He once belonged to the Northeastern Wisconsin Lions Club and was a 50-year VFW member with Suring Post 2063 and most recently Gillett Post 8314.
Survivors are his loving wife of 65 years, Laverne Giese, Green Bay; their two children, Todd (Carla) Giese, De Pere, and Beth Schowalter, Louisville, Kentucky; five granddaughters, Lori (Ted) Jacoby and Lisa (Tim) Hunt, Stacy (Keenan) Brodjeski, Dr. Dana (Jeremy Gordon) Schowalter and Stefanie (Chris) Schowalter-Lunn; nine great-grandchildren, Zachary, Anthony and Caleb Jacoby, Abigail, Moriah, Clara and Samuel Hunt, Kendrick and Annabel Brodjeski; one sister, Agnes (Richard) Ziereis, Embarrass; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Evelyn “Sally” Giese, Suring, Dawn Huebscher, Oconto, Leland “Penny” (Lois) Nicholas and Sylvia (Lowell “Buzz”) Kamke, all of Oconto Falls, and Norma Giese, Crooked Lake; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Elton, Louis, Chester and Delbert Giese; and two sisters, Gladys Giese and Dorothy Katch.
Visitation will be held after 9 a.m. Saturday, July 26, at Jones Funeral Service in Oconto Falls until the time of service. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Steve Apfel officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Breed Cemetery.
