Nine years ago the University of Wisconsin-Extension, Women Infant and Children Nutrition Program and Zion Lutheran Church partnered to start the Dreams of Green Community Garden.
Located at the corner of Zingler and Lincoln streets, the garden has grown from 21 plots in 2005 to 90 plots in 2013. More than 23 individuals and families grew their own produce at the community garden last year.
The Dream of Green Community Garden is open to the public. A single plot is 10 feet by 10 feet, and individuals rent as many plots as they need. The annual rental fee for each plot is $6. Water is available at the site.
People interested in renting a plot this year are asked to attend an organizational meeting at 5 p.m. April 21 at Zion Lutheran Church, 1254 S. Union St., Shawano.
New this year, UW-Extension will offer basic gardening classes on site throughout the summer. These classes will be offered by Jamie Patton, UW-Extension agriculture agent, in conjunction with the Wolf River Master Gardeners. The classes will cover site preparation and planting, pest identification and control, plant maintenance to maintain production, and proper harvesting, storage and preparation of produce.
