Diane Krueger has been a member of the Women in the Outdoors for 17 years.
A Caroline native, Krueger graduated from Marion High School. She was in 4-H and then a swine and summer program leader for the Caroline Aces 4-H Club. Krueger was on the state board of the Wisconsin Pork Producers. She is a charter member of the Marion Lioness, where she is past president and current membership chair. Last year she received the Lioness of the Year award. Krueger is the secretary and membership chair of the Little Wolf Gobblers. She enjoys yoga.
Krueger and her husband of 48 years, Jim, have four children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Jim works at Marion Body Works, and Diane works at Custom Fab & Body in Marion.
Q How long have you been in the Women in the Outdoors?
A “Seventeen years. The Women in the Outdoors is part of the Little Wolf Gobblers, which is the Marion area chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. One year I went to the Little Wolf Gobblers meeting. A friend said you’re just the person I need. They had been trying to get a ladies group together to be part of them. I said, what the heck, I’ll give it a try.”
Q What do the women do?
A “We’re not just outdoors, we have things inside, too. We just have one event in March. We have ladies who come from the Green Bay area who wouldn’t miss it for anything. They never imagined anything like this. We hold it at Kevin and Lori Wichman’s farm. We’ve had it there for several years. The old barn is solid knotty pine where we do crafts and have tables set up for meals. There are couches where we can sit and talk. They have a maple syrup shack where they cook and process. If it’s warm enough we get to go out in the woods and collect sap. We can show the women the whole process. It’s super interesting ”
Q What kind of crafts do you do?
A “This year we’re going to do a wall hanging using white birch. The ladies love the power tools. One year we learned how to make jewelry. We always try to do a midnight walk. This year we got a bunch of cool, little flashlights. You don’t have to go out if you don’t want to.”
Q Who makes the food?
A “Bonnie Splitt and Mary Krueger pretty much make all the food. We’ve had turkey, bear and elk meatballs. We always try to incorporate some kind of wild meat. We literally have a feast.”
Q Why do you recommend it?
A “It’s the camaraderie and meeting different people from different walks of life. It’s just so rewarding. We‘re not doing it to make a profit.”
