The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest announces its ATV, horse and bicycle trails opened May 1. In addition, many of the forest’s campgrounds and other recreation sites opened May 1.
The national forest provides more than 1.5 million acres of water and woodlands for recreation opportunities, including campgrounds, primitive camping areas, beaches, boat launches, picnic areas, nonmotorized trails and motorized trails.

The majority of the recreation sites will be open at full-service levels; however, visitors will notice a reduction of services and closures at roughly 11 percent of the forest’s total recreation sites.
“The changes this year are necessary to balance our budget given our increasing operational costs and decreasing number of visitors during the last few years,” said Paul Strong, forest supervisor on the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. “The forest has continued to maintain service at normal levels despite financial challenges during the last several years, but this practice is no longer sustainable, and we regret this change.”
CNNF welcomes feedback and suggestions on alternative ways to manage recreation sites as it works to align the forest’s recreation program by balancing operational costs and funding levels to customers’ desires and expectations.
