Shawano 47, Green Bay United 28
Shawano’s boys wrestlers battled through some adversity before defeating Green Bay United 47-28 at home.
“We started six freshman due to illness and injury as we were down some of our starters,” coach Mike Homan said. “They stepped in and battled well. We bumped up to fill some holes in our lineup, and the move payed off with some good matches.”
The night started with quick pins by Drew Chelberg and Marcus Brezgel only to lose the next two matches by pins. Shawano then took forfeits at 106 and 113 pounds.
Dane Hodkiewicz wrestled a good match at 120 that resulted in a pin. Shawano then lost by technical fall and pin in the 126- and 132-pound matches, respectively.
The back-and-forth contest continued.
At 138, freshman Dominick Thorson won by fall in the first period. The Hawks lost a close match at 144. Kody Popelka won by fall at 150. At 157m we lost another close match. In the last match of the night Jorel Matchopatow won by fall at 165.
“Marcus Brezgel, Dane Hodkiewicz, and Jorel Matchopatow all wrestled well tonight,” Homan said. “I thought they all came out ready to wrestle and put in gritty matches tonight. I like the way they wrestled in tough situations, I think it is a lot that they can build off of moving forward.”
Shawano’s record is 5-4.
Lena Quad
Lena went 3-0 at its home quad, defeating Florence 59-12, Wabeno/Laona/Three Lakes 51-20 and Antigo 50-28.
Against Florence, Erik Kosch won by pin in 3:35, and Quinton McDonald won by technical fall 17-2.
Florence won the matches at 144 and 190, both by pins.
Lena won by forfeit in eight matches. The teams had double forfeits in two other matches.
In taking on Wabeno/Laona/Three Lakes, two wins by forfeit were followed by pins by McDonald, Max Peterson and Collin Van Ark.
Next came a 7-0 decision in favor of Colt Miller, another forfeit and a pin by Dylan Urbanek.
A win by forfeit at 106 was followed by Lena’s three losses, an 11-0 major decision by Reegan Roy over Sam Peterson, a pin of Brayden Graef in 56 seconds and a 23-15 major decision against Parker Boomsma at 126 pounds.
Next was a double forfeit at 132, followed by Heinke winning by pin in 1:20.
The closest match was against Antigo, which defeated the other two teams.
The Red Robins’ Jayson Arrowood opened with a 12-0 major decision over Kosch, followed by McDonald pinning his opponent in 1:49. Max Peterson was pinned in 3:24, but Van Ark pinned Joseph Stimac in 4:44.
Miller won on an 8-3 major decision. Lena forfeited the 215 match, and Tim Benser was pinned in 38 seconds.
Lena then won two forfeits, followed by Sam Peterson winning by a pin in 1:33 at 120 and Boomsma winning on an 18-1 technical fall at 126.
Lena forfeited the 132 match. The final two matches were won by Lena. First it was Heinke by a pin in 2:28, then Riley Windus by pin in 4:59 at 144.
