Shawano police have recently received several inquiries regarding the city’s curfew, with complaints coming in about teenagers being out after dark.
The current law notes that individuals ages 14-17 are not to be on city streets, alleys or other public places from 10 p.m. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday to 6 a.m. the next day, and from midnight Friday and Saturday to 6 a.m. the next day.
For those younger than 14, the curfew runs from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily.
There are a few exceptions to the law, including if the child is with a parent or guardian, or if the child is involved in an emergency. Also, if children are performing duties as part of a job, they can be out beyond the curfew limits.
Youths can also be out if on an errand at the written direction of his or her parent or guardian, without any detour or stop. (The written direction must be signed, timed and dated by the parent or guardian and must indicate the specific errand.) This exception shall apply no later than 12:30 a.m. every day.
Children can also be out if attending, going to or returning home from, without any detour or stop, an official school, religious or other recreational activity supervised by adults and sponsored by the city, school district, a civic organization or another similar entity that takes responsibility for the minor.
Finally, children can stay out until 12:30 a.m. if he or she is on the property of or the sidewalk directly adjacent to the building in which he or she lives. This exception does not allow presence within the 100 blocks of North and South Main Street.
