“In America, small business is a big deal.” — Bob Beauprez Local service clubs are an important part of our community. Each club contributes in different ways to a variety of causes. As a member of our local Rotary Club, finding speakers for our weekly meetings is my task for the next year. This week, Shawano’s own Dan Hartwig spoke to our club. Dan is president and CEO of Twig’s Beverage.

Doug Erdman volunteers with the Shawano Optimist Club. Erdman was born and raised in Marinette, graduating from Marinette High School. He earned a certificate from Brown College in Mendota, Minn., in radio broadcasting.

The Shawano St. Vincent de Paul Society does a lot of work behind the scenes in Shawano County by helping people with their rent, food, utilities, furniture and various other necessities. “There’s such a need in town,” said Linda Koeller, president of the group. “We could really use a homeless shelter.” The group has an office at the Shawano Area Food Pantry and Resource Center.

A woman was taken into custody on drug charges Friday after Shawano County authorities executed a search warrant at a residence on Lake Drive in the town of Wescott. The warrant was obtained as part of an ongoing investigation of drug activity in the area, according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department, and followed an extensive investigation that drug activity was likely occurring at the residence. I owe worms an apology. In fact, I’m sorry I ever made fun of live bait in general. But if nightcrawlers, crickets, minnows, grasshoppers and waxworms understand my fishing history, maybe they will forgive me. My wife might have been more pleased than me at my Fourth of July weekend catch of a 19-inch smallmouth bass on a Northwoods lake—not because it was my best bass ever, but because of my bait choice.

Shawano Pathways could be getting a sizable donation from the estate of a Leopolis man if members’ fundraising skills are up to the task. Pathways received $5,000 recently from the Harold E. Pevonka Trust.

It’s a new business for northeast Wisconsin, but it’s old hat for Barb Leiterman. Leiterman recently opened The Cabin at Lone Pine Farm, a shop with home accessories and decor in the county primitive style, north of Cecil. She had previously run a similar shop in Appleton called The Cinnamon Heart before moving to Oconto County permanently. “I sold the shop, and then we moved up here,” Leiterman said.

Rocky DeLorme insisted, before passing away from cancer May 27, that any benefit for him include an aspect of health. The standout Shawano Community High School wrestler, who went on to become a mixed martial arts fighter, was into physical fitness his entire life. In keeping with his wishes, the Rocky DeLorme Memorial Benefit on July 20 will begin at 10 a.m.
