The Shawano Community High School volleyball team’s season came to an end Tuesday with a 3-1 loss to Seymour in the WIAA Division 2 regional in Seymour. The Hawks, the No. 9 seed, lost the first game to No. 8 Seymour 25-10, then won 25-16. Seymour won the last two games 25-18, 25-17. Erika Dunnam had 15 kills, three blocks, 23 digs and two aces for Shawano.

Led by bruising running backs Danny Tauchen and Hunter VanderLinden and 325 yards rushing, the Bonduel High School football team beat Manawa 41-14 Friday, clinching a spot in the WIAA playoffs that start next week. “The kids did a really good job preparing this week in practice,” Bonduel coach James Westrich said.

The Hawks’ return to the playoffs will have to wait at least one more year. First-year coach Alan Tomow had the Shawano Community High School football team knocking on the door of a playoff berth Friday night, but a tough Luxemburg-Casco team, also fighting for its playoff life, didn’t let that happen. How much input citizens should have at board meetings was discussed at a Shawano School Board workshop this week. The board met with Robert Butler, a consultant with the Wisconsin Association of School Boards, who helped to provide a refresher on the powers of the board and individual members.

The Menominee Nation’s chairman believes his tribe can craft an agreement on an off-reservation casino in Kenosha that Gov. Scott Walker would approve. The Menominee won federal approval for the casino in August, but Walker has the final say. The governor has said he wouldn’t green-light the project unless there was community support, no net increase in gambling and Wisconsin’s other 10 tribes approve the plans.

Although physical evidence was scarce, an Oconto County jury Thursday found a rural Shawano man guilty of two counts of homicide. The jury deliberated almost five hours before announcing Daniel Schmidt, 30, was guilty of murdering his ex-mistress, Kimberly Rose, and her brother, Leonard Marsh, in 2009.
