The Shawano Common Council on Wednesday will consider creating a Tax Incremental Finance district aimed at spurring development along East Green Bay Street. Shawano County has not abandoned plans for a wage study, but some supervisors are questioning whether the study will change anything for employees. On Monday, members of the Administrative Committee questioned how effective a wage study would be in the wake of the recent county budget, where supervisors could not find enough money to provide even cost-of-living increases to more than 300 employees. The study was planned as part of a larger study

The Shawano County Finance Committee on Monday recommended rejecting a fee increase for cremations proposed by the county coroner’s office. Supervisors expressed dismay that Coroner Mike Jesse requested the increase, just one month after the County Board approved the 2014 budget.

The Shawano County Arts Council and the Box in the Wood Theatre Guild is presenting its annual community gift, “Star Spangled Christmas,” in December at the Mielke Arts Center. The performances are free and no reservations are required, but seating will be on a first come, first served basis. The show will be performed at 7 p.m. Dec. 5-6 and 2 p.m. Dec. 7-8. The lobby opens one hour prior, and the theater 30 minutes prior.

Shawano Community Middle School We had a Veterans Day ceremony at the middle school. The local vets presented the colors, there was the pledge, an invocation, the national anthem, service songs, a presentation of student essays, taps, a gun salute and the retreat of the colors. An American soldier’s white table was displayed for those lost in battle. At the end of the ceremony the vets were thanked by our student body in a receiving line.

Norman A. Raeder Sr., 84, of the town of Wescott, Shawano, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, Nov. 8, 2013, at his home. Norman was born Oct. 28, 1929, in Bear Creek, a son of the late William H. and Lily Ann (Wolfgram) Raeder. He attended the Shawano schools. He later worked with his father doing construction work, farming and logging. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Beverly Mae Monroe, 73, of the town of Washington, passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, in Appleton. Born on Oct. 21, 1940, in Milwaukee, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Sybella (Loppnow) Earsley. On Nov. 24, 1982, she was united in marriage to Glenn Monroe in Port Washington. Bev worked as a secretary for Warren-Nett Realty and also worked at Walmart. She had a warm heart and truly enjoyed life.

Robert Earl Fleming quietly went to heaven Nov. 11, 2013, at the age of 87. He was born March 7, 1926, to the late Leo and Carrie (Schultz) Fleming. He graduated from Seymour High School with the Class of 1944. He kept many lifelong friends from that time. On Nov. 9, 1946, he was united in marriage to Delores Wagner, and the couple just celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.

Lester A. Anderson, 78, passed away Oct. 19, 2013, in Livingston, Mont., after suffering a stroke. He was born in Port Wing on May 24, 1935, to Edward and Dorothy (Carlson) Anderson. He graduated from Rudolph High School in 1953. The family then moved to Pittsville. Les married Virginia Kleitgen, of Pittsville, on April 11, 1956. They moved to Shawano in 1958. He worked in the dairy industry for Badger Breeders.
