Health focus fades without Doll-Yogerst

To the editor: The fall session of Healthy Hearts has been cancelled at Oconto Falls Library due to Oconto County University of Wisconsin-Extension cancelling the contract of Donna Doll-Yogerst. Donna and I have collaborated on many programs in the past, offering free programs to make Oconto County healthier. Ancestors tell harrowing story of Peshtigo fire
In October 2013, I wrote a column about the Great Peshtigo Fire, which occurred on the same day as the more famous, but much smaller, Chicago Fire, Oct. 8, 1871. After reading that column, my cousin Lana Sutton, a retired Methodist minister, wrote to me. Messy rain precedes beautiful weekend
Having a weekend of great weather, followed by another outstanding day on the start of the work week, is a rare trifecta on the path around the Falls, but the string won’t last through the week. Heavy rains are again forecast for later in the week. Last week’s rain made it appear in a few places that the swamps and wetlands were rising up to retake the earth. The 40 days and 40 nights of rain in the days of Noah must have left quite a mess.

Amherst passing attack too much for Bears
Bonduel High School scored the first touchdown of the game at Amherst, but it was downhill from there, as the Bears lost 54-19 Friday. The game got away from Bonduel (2-1, 0-1 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) early and the Bears entered halftime trailing 30-13. “We had a number of penalties that killed our drives,” Bonduel coach James Westrich said.

Hawks suffer first loss at Seymour
The Shawano Community High School football team was unable to bounce back after Seymour scored on five of its first seven drives en route to a 42-6 loss Friday. The Hawks (2-1, 1-1 in Bay Conference) had plenty of offense in a pair of wins to start the season.

McCarthy and Packers look to regroup
While they received relatively good news on the injury front Friday, the Green Bay Packers still must fix all that went wrong during a season-opening loss to the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. Packers coach Mike McCarthy confirmed Friday that starting right tackle Bryan Bulaga escaped major damage to his surgically repaired left knee.

Kenny J. LaTender
Kenny J. LaTender, 39, of Middle Village, passed away on Sept. 4, 2014, in Green Bay. Kenny was born on Sept. 19, 1974, in Merrill, to Simon and Carol (Vigue) LaTender. On June 7, 1997, Kenny was united in marriage to MeShan Beauprey. He worked and lived all his life on the Menominee Reservation. Kenny was a great dad who enjoyed spending time with his sons, attending their sports activities whenever possible.

Crews spend Friday cleaning up after storms
Shawano County highway crews were still in cleanup mode Friday, the day after a one-two punch from Mother Nature that socked the area with a double dose of storms. Separate storm fronts early Thursday morning and Thursday evening dumped an estimated four inches of rain in the county, damaging trees and power lines and flooding some roadways.
