The Suring School Board is primed to ask voters for an extra $700,000 in each of the next five years, to address a budget deficit projected to be nearly $470,000 by 2017. At Wednesday’s School Board meeting Superintendent Kelly Casper presented a financial forecast showing a downward trend in the district’s fund balance that would leave the district in the red in a few years. “We need to do something,” Casper said.

The Oconto Falls School Board has deeded two Jefferson School lots to a local historical preservation association. With a 6-1 vote Monday, the board agreed to use a quit claim deed to transfer ownership of the lots to the Oconto Falls Area Heritage Center, which plans to develop a historical attraction at the site. Rough asphalt patches on Oconto Falls streets are scheduled to be warmed and reshaped to create a smoother surface in spots torn up by utility work this fall. Drivers on Main Street experience a bumpy and shaky ride now. Craig Schuh, engineer/manager from Ayres Associates, told the City Council on Dec. 9 that Jossart Brothers will do “everything in their power” to make the streets more passable.

The Oconto Falls School Board on Monday approved the redesign proposal of parking lots and entrance points at Abrams Elementary. The design, prepared by project manager Rettler Corporation, is intended to create a safer traffic flow, additional parking and better surface drainage. The fog that descended on the path around the Falls over the weekend and on Monday might have been Mother Nature’s way of building alignment between the weather and the state of mind of many who travel the path. The physical fog was caused by a bout of mild temperatures that turned the snow cover into a mist. It was good to see green lawns again, wherever the fog went. Comments had been made that the snow came too early this year.

The Kelly Lake Sportsman’s Club will hold its annual ice fishing derby from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10. The family event will be held under a heated tent and includes a fishing contest with cash awards. A hot lunch and refreshments will be available. Bucket, meat and 50/50 raffles will be held.
