Herbert “Herb” H. Zahn, 76, of Clintonville, formerly of Embarrass, passed away Saturday morning, Dec. 27, 2014, at the Appleton Medical Center. The Eberhardt-Stevenson Funeral Home & Crematory of Clintonville is assisting his family with the arrangements.

Sobriety pow-wow heralds new year
For the last 10 years, a community coalition in Menominee County has coordinated a safe alternative to ringing in the New Year with alcohol. This year will be no different as Menominee Indian High School hosts the Menominee Sobriety Pow-wow, including a free feast consisting of turkey, wild rice and corn soup, on New Year’s Eve. The event kicks off at 5 p.m. Wednesday. It will be the first year the event has been held at MIHS.
The icemen, and women, cometh
Mid-December’s mild temperatures did not deter ice fishing enthusiasts from venturing onto Shawano Lake for the 46th annual Bonduel Lions Club Fishing Derby on Saturday. Participants reported the ice was at least 10 inches thick.
Judges mull action on clerk of court
A written ruling will be issued at some point in response to a petition seeking the removal from office of Shawano County Clerk of Courts Susan Krueger. Judges James Habeck and William Kussel Jr.
Fire destroys landmark restaurant
Rita Mondus and the last of her employees working Monday night closed Anello’s Torch Lite about 11 p.m., never thinking it was going to be for the final time. A little over two hours later, Mondus, who lives in the house next door with her husband, John, saw smoke coming out of the restaurant. Firefighters from Shawano and Bonduel were called around 1:30 a.m.
Elaine G. Schaal
Elaine “Annie” G. Schaal, 73, Gillett, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 24, 2014, at St. Clare Memorial Hospital. She was born July 10, 1941, in the Oconto Falls area to Chester and Beatrice (Spice) Schaal. Elaine grew up in the Oconto Falls area, where she graduated high school.
‘Nunsense’ auditions scheduled
Abrams Spotlight Productions Inc. will holding open auditions for its next musical, “Nunsense,” from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 6 and Jan. 7 at The Byng Community Theater, 5852 Maple St., Abrams. Actors age 15 and older are welcome to audition. They should prepare to sing an upbeat song from a musical (not a song from “Nunsense”).
